‘Spurs Managerial Hunt’

Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Lee McQueen, John from Lilywhite Rose and debutant to the show Matt Hayes as the Last Word On Spurs returned.

Tottenham Hotspur are edging towards the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as their next head coach and that in turn could increase the influence of super agent Jorge Mendes at the club.

Extensive talks have now been held with the 47-year-old former Wolves boss about taking the job in north London and he could be appointed next week ahead of the return of Spurs’ non-international players for pre-season training at Hotspur Way on July 5.

It has been 67 days since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties and a messy search for his successor has seen the club hold talks with varied styles of candidates despite Daniel Levy’s clear and very public message to the fans that he wanted to appoint a head coach who would bring “free-flowing, attacking and entertaining” football.

‘2021/22 Fixtures Revealed’

Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Jason McGovern and Chris Cowlin on this edition of the Last Word On Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur’s fixtures for the 2021/22 Premier League season have been confirmed. Spurs, who finished seventh last campaign, will take on champions Man City at home on the opening day, before travelling to Wolves a week later. The Lilywhites really do have a tough start to the season with Chelsea at home and Arsenal away to come in September.

At home to Crystal Palace on Boxing Day and Watford away on New Year’s Day, the second north London derby of the season comes in January as the Gunners make the short trip to N17. Spurs then bring the 2021/22 campaign to a close on the final day with an away trip to Norwich City.

‘Season Review 20/21’

Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Lee McQueen and Jason McGovern the panel review Tottenham Hotspur 20/21 season.

It was a false start against Everton on opening day, but Mourinho-ball soon began to pay off for Spurs. They kicked things into overdrive with a famous 6-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, and by December, they were staring in the face of a legitimate title challenge.

Mourinho was quick to play things down, however, and his claim that Tottenham were “a pony in a horse race” was soon proven right. They lost to Liverpool and Chelsea in December as their form tailed off, and by April, he was out of a job.

The temporary appointment of Ryan Mason hasn’t been the disaster many predicted, but two defeats in their last five league matches buried any residual hopes they had of making the Champions League.

Their win over Leicester on the final day was a real source of optimism – though there are some Spurs fans who would have rather finished 8th, such is the roaring excitement about their involvement in the Conference League.

‘Huge Summer Ahead’

Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Richard Cracknell, Lee McQueen, Antony Costa and Ricky J Norwood on this Last Word On Spurs.

Leicester missed out on the Champions League for a second successive season after a 4-2 defeat to Tottenham on the final day saw them finish in fifth, while Spurs secured their European place.

The Foxes needed results to go their way elsewhere, but had to secure their own victory first to ensure the best possible chance of finishing in the top four.

It began well for them too as Leicester were awarded a penalty inside 15 minutes. Toby Alderweireld caught Jamie Vardy around the ankles, and the striker fired home from the spot (18). But just before half-time, Harry Kane (41) finished superbly to secure his third Premier League Golden Boot – the joint-highest number of wins in history with Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer – in possibly his last game for Tottenham.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Leicester were awarded a second penalty shortly after the break, won by Vardy again after a tangle with Davinson Sanchez. The striker scored in an almost identical fashion too, slotting home another confident penalty (52).

With Chelsea trailing Aston Villa and Leicester ahead, they were in pole position to finish in the Champions League places, but a late flurry from Tottenham condemned the Foxes to the Europa League. The second equaliser was a bizarre moment as a Heung-Min Son corner defected off Kasper Schmeichel’s hand (76) and into the back of the net.

A Gareth Bale double (87, 90+6) then fired Tottenham into seventh, securing their own place in the Europa Conference League next season. They have also finished a point and place above Arsenal.

‘Lack Of Direction’

Host Richard Cracknell was joined by John from Lilywhite Rose and Jason McGovern on this Last Word On Spurs.

Tottenham were booed off by their returning fans as Aston Villa fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 and dent Spurs’ European hopes.

Spurs did briefly give their 10,000 fans something to cheer about after eight minutes as Steven Bergwijn fired home powerfully from just inside the box, but Sergio Reguilon’s shocking own goal from a sliced clearance brought Villa level (20).

Spurs were woeful for much of the first half as Ollie Watkins capitalised on another Reguilon error for his 14th league goal of the season (39) as the hosts were booed off at half-time following several missed Villa chances.

Emi Martinez kept Villa ahead with several saves as Spurs upped the ante in the second half, and though Villa were put under pressure in spurts by the hosts, they had fine chances of their own and were good value for the three points, hitting the post through substitute Carney Chukwuemeka in stoppage time.

The defeat summed up the mood around manager-less Spurs, with Harry Kane looking to leave the club, and the hope of any European football next season now under threat. They sit seventh, which would earn them a place in the new Europa Conference League next season. They must beat Leicester on the final day and hope West Ham lose at home to Southampton to move into sixth place and a Europa League spot. Villa stay 11th.

‘Eyes On Europe’

Host Richard Cracknell was joined by Lee McQueen, Jamie Brown from Daily Hotspur and Jason McGovern on this Last Word On Spurs.

Harry Kane’s 22nd Premier League goal of the season helped Tottenham move up to sixth following a routine 2-0 win over Wolves.

Kane struck on the stroke of half-time after being released by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and the Dane tucked in Spurs’ second following the interval after Rui Patricio had diverted Gareth Bale’s shot straight into this path.

Fabio Silva endured a profligate afternoon in front of goal as he missed a gilt-edged chance to haul Wolves back into the contest, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side consigned to a 15th league defeat of the season.

The result sees Spurs leapfrog West Ham into sixth place on 59 points, five points adrift of Chelsea in fourth with two games remaining, while Wolves stay in 12th place.

‘Soul-Searching Spurs’

Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Lee McQueen, Chris Cowlin and John Wenham from Lilywhite Rose on this edition of the Last Word On Spurs.

Tottenham’s hopes of finishing the season inside the Premier League’s top four took a huge blow as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United.

Spurs’ interim boss Ryan Mason had targeted four wins to finish the season and with Leicester’s surprise defeat at Newcastle on Friday, the door had just been opened for Spurs in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, they suffered an early set back when Stuart Dallas gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute.

Tottenham cancelled out Dallas’ opener to draw level in the 25th minute through Heung-Min Son, but Leeds regained the lead just before half-time as Patrick Bamford converted Ezgjan Alioski’s cut-back from close range.

Spurs, who saw two Harry Kane goals correctly ruled out for offside, had chances in the second half but Illan Meslier kept out efforts from Serge Aurier and Giovani Lo Celso before substitute Rodrigo added Leeds’ third to seal all three points.

‘The Bale Show’

Host Richard Cracknell was joined by Lee McQueen and Antony Costa on this edition of the Last Word On Spurs.

Gareth Bale scored a brilliant hat-trick as Tottenham shook off their Carabao Cup final misery and kept alive their Champions League hopes with a 4-0 win over relegated Sheffield United.

Bale’s 36th-minute opener, a fine instinctive flick from close range, was scant reward for Spurs’ first-half dominance, but though Heung-Min Son saw an effort after the break (52) ruled out for offside, the Welshman would strike twice more legitimately and emphatically.

Bale brought up his 50th Premier League goal shortly after the hour mark when he was set up by Son on a Spurs breakaway and hit a fierce third without breaking stride (69) to fire a further reminder of his enduring potency.

The Blades, for whom John Fleck escaped punishment after a VAR review after catching Giovani Lo Celso on the head, had twice built momentum before conceding but Bale’s third goal ended their fleeting resistance and Son completed the rout with a brilliant curled finish 13 minutes from time.
