James Maddison was fit to play after suffering an ankle injury during last weekend’s victory over Manchester United, and it was the England international who gave Spurs the lead in the 17th minute when he turned in Pape Sarr’s precise through ball to end a fine passing move.

Bournemouth improved after the break but could do little to prevent Spurs from doubling their advantage 18 minutes into the second half. Destiny Udogie danced in from the left and exchanged passes with captain Heung-Min Son before keeping the ball in play brilliantly to find Dejan Kulusevski, who converted from close range to score his first goal since January. It sealed the win for Tottenham and, with the fixture being the early kick-off on Saturday, the three points temporarily moved them top of the Premier League before they were replaced by West Ham a few hours later.

There were pre-match demonstrations against chairman Daniel Levy and owners ENIC, but Postecoglou was given a thunderous reception and once the action got under way Spurs responded with a vivid demonstration of the attacking style that is the Australian’s trademark.

Spurs and United created chances throughout a sometimes chaotic encounter before the deadlock was broken by Pape Matar Sarr’s goal, drilled high into the net from close range four minutes after the interval. In a game of numerous chances, Spurs sealed the victory in front of the ecstatic home support after 83 minutes when Ivan Perisic’s cross took a touch off Ben Davies before going in via Lisandro Martinez.

Host Ricky Sacks is joined by returning guests Jason McGovern, Patrick Tyrant and Christina Zandes on this Last Word On Spurs as we reflect on Harry Kane completing his £100m move to Bayern Munich from Tottenham and making his debut on Saturday, coming off the bench in his side’s 3-0 German Super Cup defeat to RB Leipzig.

In a farewell message to Tottenham, Kane said it was the right time to leave the club – but added this may not be goodbye forever.

We also reflect on Heung-min being appointed the new Tottenham captain. New £40m signing James Maddison and defender Cristian Romero will serve as vice-captains. Boss Ange Postecoglou moved quick to anoint a new skipper after Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich.

The decision is said to have been well received by the Tottenham squad with the trio viewed as the right kind of characters to lead the team into a new era. Son, 31, has a wealth of captaincy experience for his country, of whom he has 111 caps.

While the squad are well aware they’ll miss Kane, there is a general excitement about the prospects of rising to the challenge of filing his void rather than relying too much on one player.
